Step 2: Approval Criteria

Courses must adhere to the LA CES definition of continuing professional education: "Continuing professional education consists of learning experiences that enhance and expand the skills, knowledge, and abilities of practicing landscape architects to remain current and render competent professional service to clients and the public."

Criterion 1

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Courses must specify whether the primary subject matter meets the LA CES definition of Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW). For a course to be considered as meeting the LA CES HSW standard, at least 75% of the course material must qualify under this definition. (<a href="https://www.asla.org/determining-public-health,-safety,-and-welfare-classification" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Click here</a> for more information on determining if a course meets the public health, safety, and welfare classification.)</span></p>

Criterion 2

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Courses must follow LA CES guidelines when assigning professional development hours (PDH), and each course must be a minimum of 1 PDH in length. (Click <a href="https://www.asla.org/lacescalculatingpdh/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> for more information on calculating professional development hours and click <a href="https://www.asla.org/lacesdistanceducation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> for more information on distance education requirements.)</span></p>

Criterion 3

Courses must be designed to address the specific learning needs of the target audience and must include clear, concise written learning objectives or outcomes. Each course requires at least three learning objectives/outcomes.

<p>Provide examples of learning objectives/outcomes for at least one course your organization has sponsored. A minimum of three (3) learning objectives/outcomes, a course outline and a course description (75-100 words) is required for each course:</p>

Provide a clear, engaging summary of your course’s content (75 words max.)

Session outlines should demonstrate a clear and concise plan. The outline should cover the course description and learning objectives.

Each learning outcome should clearly and concisely describe what the attendee will learn in one sentence (30 words max.)

<p>Provide examples of learning objectives/outcomes for the additional course. A minimum of three (3) learning objectives/outcomes, a course outline, and a course description (75-100 words) is required for each course:</p>

Criterion 4

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Courses must meet the following requirements:</span></p>

<li style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Qualified Instructional Personnel: Courses must be developed and delivered by qualified instructors with relevant experience, knowledge, and credentials.</span></li>
<li style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Appropriate Content and Methods: The course content and instructional methods should align with the intended learning objectives and outcomes.</span></li>
<li style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Educational Materials: Materials used in the course should be educational, generic in nature, and support the learning objectives. &ldquo;How-to&rdquo; demonstration courses of proprietary products are not permitted. <a href="https://www.asla.org/lacesproprietaryguidelines" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Click here</a> for more information on proprietary information</span></li>
<li style="color: #000000;"><span style="color: #000000;">Instructor Role: Instructors should focus on teaching and should not act as salespeople promoting any products or services.</span></li>
</ul>

Criterion 5

Courses must include a mechanism for assessing participant attainment of the learning objectives/outcomes.

Criterion 6

Courses must be evaluated by participants and issue a confirmation and verification of completion for each participant who completes a course.

Criterion 7

Courses must maintain complete attendance records for at least six (6) years and make them available to participants upon request. A review process must be in place to ensure that LA CES criteria are met. Attendance records must be submitted on the LA CES website within twenty (20) business days after the event’s completion, using the provided template. Additionally, approved providers must retain copies of all course materials for a minimum of six (6) years.

Criterion 8

<p>Distance education is defined as: A method of instruction where there is a separation of place and/or time between the instructor and learner, between fellow learners, and/or the learners and the learning resources. Courses can be either real-time (where the instructor and learners are engaging in the learning activity at the same time) or asynchronous (where instructor and learners are separated by time and are not engaging in the learning activity simultaneously).</p>

Step 3: Distance Education

<li>Provide accurate and truthful information in all communications with LA CES.</li>
<li>Operate ethically and with respect to the professionals we serve.</li>
<li>Clearly disclose all program details, services, and fees in promotional materials.</li>
<li>Use only the LA CES-approved provider recognition statement, understanding that recognition does not guarantee compliance with individual state continuing education requirements.</li>
<li>Identify only LA CES-registered courses as being recognized by LA CES.</li>
<li>Notify LA CES within 30 days of any significant organizational or program changes affecting your provider qualifications.</li>
<li>Cooperate with the LA CES Monitoring Committee for compliance purposes.</li>
<li>Submit requested information, collaborate with LA CES, and pay all required fees promptly.</li>
<li>Comply with all LA CES criteria and terms or relinquish provider status following due process.</li>
<li>Accept and abide by any updates to the LA CES criteria or notify LA CES of our intent to withdraw.</li>
</ul>
